Owen Nxumalo, the Minister of Education and Training of Eswatini, underscored the Kingdom’s commitment to promoting Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects during his address at the II International Forum of Ministers of Education, themed “Shaping the Future.”
The forum, held from June 10-11, gathered representatives from 46 delegations across 39 countries, including several African nations. It was inaugurated by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who emphasized Russia’s dedication to accessible and technologically advanced education, aligned with international integration frameworks like BRICS and the CIS.
Minister Nxumalo commended the Russian Federation for organizing a successful forum, reflecting on the impactful discussions and recommendations from the inaugural forum in 2023. He expressed confidence that this year’s event would further strengthen global collaboration in education.
Highlighting Eswatini’s educational advancements, Nxumalo emphasized the country’s embrace of e-learning, particularly accelerated during the Covid-19 pandemic. He noted ongoing efforts to digitize the curriculum, enhancing interactive learning environments with technology.
Further aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4), Eswatini’s Education Sector Strategic Plan 2022/34, supported by His Majesty King Mswati III, focuses on foundational learning improvement and skills development. Nxumalo highlighted government initiatives such as funding Grade 0 education and integrating ICT into educational frameworks to support early learning.
The Minister reiterated Eswatini’s strategic focus on STEM subjects, essential for driving innovation and economic growth. He emphasized the pivotal role of forums like these in fostering dialogue, sharing best practices, and forging partnerships to transform education systems globally.
